The January nonfarm labor market in California saw a slight improvement over the previous month, with 32,500 job vacancies were occupied in many sectors, the Employment Development Department said Friday.

The increase movement initiated as the situation throughout the economy took a turn for better, with industries across the board start hiring workers for mining and logging, construction, manufacturing, education, government and other sectors, the department said in a report. Eight of the 11 sectors have benefited from the gains, it said. The construction sector added 16,200 jobs, manufacturing added 8,900, and education and health services added 7,100.

All told, there are 15.85 million people in the state who are holding a job, the report said.

However, the overall unemployment rate for the month was 12.5 percent, slightly higher than 12.3 percent for December following a monthly revision of the employment rate estimates. Those who lost their jobs total 717,070, but the number is fewer than December's 792,764, the report concluded.
