The World Media Summit (WMS) held in Beijing should help bridge the prejudice gap between peoples from different countries, an official of the Moroccan news agency Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP) told Xinhua in a recent interview.

The summit, from Oct. 8 to 10, is an opportunity to "identify the approaches capable of maximizing the possibilities offered by new information technologies, to pave the way for dialogue and to step over the big pit created by prejudices and stereotypes, tensions and cultural biases," said Hanae Dakka, director of foreign relations of the MAP.

"We are witnessing one of the most important revolutions for half a century that have profoundly reshape the world," said Dakka.

During the summit, heads of media organizations around the world analyze the current situation, assess the development trends of the global media industry on a series of crucial issues confronting media organizations against the backdrop of the international financial crisis, fast changing audience demands and the rapid advancement of emerging technologies.

"The international flow of information breaks down all borders, while paradoxically helps to build others," she added.

Over three quarters of the world population, particularly those in the developing countries, is suffering from lack of information and especially of useful information that enables them to develop, said Dakka who called on media to promote constructive dialogue and understanding between peoples.

Dakka hailed China for its "tremendous success in the field of media development and modernization."

"The policy of openness and transparency adopted by the Chinese government regarding the news coverage of events show that it is genuinely and actively committed to the freedom of communication," she said.

Dakka also said MAP wishes to "go ahead towards modernization," citing the agency's new moves, such as opening new offices, readjusting journalists' oversea postings, upgrading technical infrastructure, and strengthening cooperation with regional and international news agencies.
