2009-10-09 10:15

The three-day World Media Summit, being held in Beijing from Thursday to Saturday, is a good platform to learn and exchange ideas among media professionals, said Yong Soo Heong, editor-in-chief of Malaysia's national news agency Bernama.

"At the World Media Summit, we will be open to ideas, suggestions and new ways of doing things," said Yong Soo Heong in a recent interview with Xinhua.

"I think the summit is about going forward to learn things and how we can do things better," said Yong who will attend the summit with Bernama's General Manager Hasnal Hassan.

The summit, themed "Cooperation, Action, Win-Win and Development", was attended by the leaders of major media organizations across the world, including news agencies, newspapers and magazines, radio and television broadcasters and online sites.

He said that Bernama was participating in the summit with expectations, including seeing and learning many important new things that have been happening in the industry.

The summit also provided an occasion to meet the world's media leaders and organizations, he said.

Xinhua, host and co-sponsor of the summit, has gathered so many media in one particular place, Yong said, "so that we can learn many things together within a short time."

"When we come back to Malaysia, we will bring back what we have learned and seen and benefit our organization," he added.

Yong also said that the news organizations like Bernama are thinking about presenting news in a better and faster way to face the challenges brought by advanced technologies.

He suggested all the media should consider how to present news at a more coherent manner due to today's information boom.

He noted that so many new approaches are now available for people to disseminate news, such as the Internet, the mobile phones and other smart mobile devices.

Bernama has been offering news services not only to newspapers, TV stations, radios and the Internet, but also to smart mobile phones, which enables subscribers to receive news anywhere anytime, he said.

"I would like to share information with people who have not done this and find out if there are any new innovative methods pioneered by the world's organizations in terms of news distribution," Yong said.

He also urged summit participants to forge deeper cooperation with each other, calling it a real benefit for them. He expected efforts to be taken to facilitate cooperation in terms of news exchange, resource exchange and personnel training.

He proposed making the exchange of human resources a regular and annual event. "It will help people in both sides to have a better understanding of each other, and to minimize misunderstanding," he said.

He said Bernama will try to explore ways to enhance cooperation with Xinhua for the benefits of both organizations.

Yong said he regarded the summit as a very important event. "Too often we have seen major media summits in Western countries, (but) this is the first major media summit to be held in Asia, in Beijing," he said.

"It's great for Asian countries to be doing something on the global basis," he added.

He expressed the hope that the summit will become a regular event where media people meet and exchange ideas on a regular basis.
