At least six people were killed and 17 others injured Tuesday in a train collision in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, police said.

Local TV channels quoted a police officer as confirming the casualties from the collision between a cargo train and a passenger train near Juma Ghot in Karachi.

He also said that according to initial investigation, one of the drivers made the mistake.

A railway official was quoted as saying that the accident was caused by negligence of the passenger driver according to a preliminary report.

Aftab Memon, the railway official, told reporters that the driver of the passenger train Allama Iqbal Express was very late to respond to the red signal, resulting in a head-on collision with a cargo train on the same track.

Several passengers are still trapped in the train. The first wagon of the passenger train was badly damaged.
