A local privately owned medical center has been ordered to pay 10,000 yuan (US$1,465) in compensation to a woman who received in-vitro fertilization in the center but failed to have a baby because of an ectopic pregnancy.

Huangpu District People's Court ruled that Shanghai Ji'ai Genetics and IVF Institute wasn't responsible for the pregnancy failure. But it did allow unlicensed staff to make an ultrasonic examination.

The woman surnamed Mo, from Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, went to Ji'ai for infertility and became pregnant through in-vitro surgery in 2007.

Medical experts said ultrasonic checks can't detect ectopic -- or out-of-place -- pregnancies with 100 percent accuracy.

However, the experts added that the ultrasonic check didn't conform to medical standards.
