TOKYO, Jan. 1 -- An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Kuril Islands at 07:35:50 GMT on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 48.70 km, was initially determined to be at 46.9042 degrees north latitude and 151.0225 degrees east longitude.
