SHANGHAI police said they will reinforce patrols even more this month in a crackdown against street theft and robbery to ensure a safe and stable atmosphere before the Spring Festival.
In December, police said their efforts helped drop theft and robbery cases by 17.2 percent compared with the previous December.
Early yesterday morning, a man was caught by Hongkou District police in the robbery of a woman on Friday night, police said.
The incident happened about 7pm when the suspect was trying to steal a cell phone from a female pedestrian at Siping Road near Tianshui Road. The suspect pulled out a knife, threatening and cutting her to get the cell phone.
After checking the footage of surveillance cameras in the area, police found the suspect on Linping Road nearby at 1am yesterday.
On December 18, a man robbed a visitor of a bag in Zhabei Park about 5pm. The 19-year-old suspect, surnamed Zhang, was caught an hour later at the park, police said.
Theft and robbery cases often increase before the Spring Festival as expectations rise that those returning to their hometowns during the Chinese New Year will bring money back with them.
