JAKARTA, Oct. 22 -- A magnitude 5.6 earthquake jolted Aceh province on the northern tip of Sumatra island on Tuesday, triggering panic, but there are no initial reports of damages or casualty, officials said.

The quake struck at 13:12 p.m. Jakarta time (0612 GMT) with the epicenter at 16 km southwest of Aceh Besar district at a depth of 10 km, an official of the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency told Xinhua by phone.

"The quake caused panic and people rushed out of their houses," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho spokesman of national disaster management and mitigation agency told Xinhua by phone.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago country, sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
