Hot Topic: Folklores in Shanghai

These native alley sports, practiced and handed down by the local folks for generations, prove to be very popular among the local Shanghainese. The nine zi games refer to nine different games whose names sharing the common affix zi. They are Zao Fang Zi (the girls’favorite game, draw a building on the ground, hop and kick a small brick on it), Guan Jie Zi (throw a stone into the air while turning over 6 dominos successively to certain forms before it falls down back in your hand), Da Dan Zi (dig several fist-size round holes on the ground, shot a glass ball out of your hand by using your thumb, you may shot at other player’s glass ball or roll your ball into the holes according to some rules), Gun Lun Zi (roll an iron circle with a stick at the end of which there is a hook), Tiao Jin Zi (very common in China, people skip or dance over a rubber band), Tao Quan Zi (throw some circles at some bottles), Ding He Zi (draw three concentric circles on the ground and place an olive core in the heart, players stand straight above and drop another core at the former one), Chou Tuo Zi (wrap the string around the peg-top and pull it hard to make it go), Che Ling Zi (also named Chinese yo-yo, quite like diabolo in western countries). They combine athletics, pastime with body building. Tourists could experience both the Shanghai style of life and the simple local folklores.
