COVESTRO The ‘golden tiger’ roars in China

2018-10-17 15:02:48

Covestro, formerly known as Bayer Material Science, is one of the world’s largest polymer producers, focusing on the production of high-tech polymers. The chemical products produced by Covestro serve China’s industries ofconstruction, auto, electronics and electrical.

In 2008 and 2009, when the global financial crisis broke out, the company’s Chinese team took a bullish view of China and went against the tide to build the TDI plant. In 2010 (the Lunar Year of Tiger in China), a second round of investment was launched in the Integrated Site Shanghai. The project was thus named “golden tiger.” At present, the integrated site has become COVESTRO’s largest production site globally, which promptly fills the gap in China’s dependence on imported chemical raw materials.

In addition to product localization, Covestro is also committed to local talent training.Covestro-Tongji Innovation Academy, jointly established by Covestro and Tongji University, has been established to conduct research on exploring and innovating industry-academia cooperation models with a view toward industrialization of innovation achievements in the area of transportation and construction.

Covestro has been following closely the message that the Chinese government sent to the worldduring the NPC & CPPCC this year: to advocate the concept of green development and strive to ensure a more balanced and efficient economy in China. Now the company is committed to developing the projects which can increase the energy efficiency. It is Covestro’s target that by 2025, the carbon dioxide emissions per ton of products will be reduced by 50 percent compared with 2005.
