Zhao Minli points out in Literary Review (No. 4, 2021) that Yao Dian (theChronologyofEmperor Yao) is neither an authentic history nor a myth, but a classic formed on the basis of cultural memory, as far as its textual nature is concerned. Originating from the Yao and Shun times, it is a history from memory rather than a history of facts, implying early cultural identity of the Chinese nation and the political imagination of later generations for the Yao and Shun times. It was originally formed by historians of the Xia Dynasty based on the cultural memory of the Yao and Shun times, then embellished with culture accumulation in Shang and Zhou dynasties, and then finalized in the Confucius time. This is a process of writing and classicizing cultural memory. The reason why Yao Dian is called a classic work of scholarship is it’s where the social ideal of the Chinese nation lays -- the saint politics under the Great Unification. Yao and Shun have become saints in Chinese culture. The crown abdication by selecting and appointing other talented and capable person as the emperor has become a tale praised widely. This makes it not only a wonderful cultural memory, but also a huge cultural force to promote continuous improvement of social systems.
