Intersection of Gender History and Emotions History

From:社科报2022-6-7 14:22

Gender history and emotions history, both arising at the end of the 20th century, have become new schools attracting attention of today's studies of world history, Wang Qingjia indicated in the third issue of Collected Papers of History Studies in 2022. From the perspective of the development of Western historiography, gender history and emotions history are closely related. By exploring gender differences in emotional expression, historians have revealed the social and historical nature of gender composition, making both emotions and gender important subjects of historical study. The intersection of gender history and emotions history reveals the inadequacy of European dualistic philosophy and helps us to rethink the traditional historical stages and review the heritage of modern historiography which presumes rationalism. In a word, the rise of gender history, emotions history, and such related schools as the history of the body, family history and children’s history has challenged the "grand narrative" in modern historiography. From a “history from within” perspective, it addresses more fundamental issues in the study of history, for emotional and bodily interaction between human beings and social relations of families and children have underpinned human evolution.
