On the Limitation of Validity of “Taking History as a Mirror”

From:社科报2022-7-26 11:30

As Zhang Xushan indicated in the third issue of Journal of Tsinghua University (Philosophy and Social Sciences), 2022,"taking history as a mirror" is one of the oldest cultural conceptions in China; while Chinese take its validity for granted, there have been doubts or even denies in western ideological circles since modern times; as Hegel believes, experience and history tell us that ethnic groups or governments have never learned from history. The validity of "taking history as a mirror" is probabilistic in nature, rather than being inevitable. When humans draw lessons from history, they are not only controlled by reason, but also strongly interfered with by natural desires (material desire, lust and power desire), so it is not inevitable for people to learn from history. The numerous tragedies in human history are varied in form, but in essence they are mostly attributed to too many desires. Avoidance from too many desires driven by power is one of the core issues of modern politics.
