"Thalassa: The Sea in Greek Art from Antiquity until Today" was kicked off at Shanghai Museum on July 18. The exhibition was jointly organized by the Shanghai Museum and the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Hellenic Republic.
Thalassa, a goddess of the sea in primitive mythology, symbolizes the sea that surrounds the Mainland Greece and nurtures its many islands. It not only represents the main geographical feature of Greece, but also is important part of Greek life and psychology. The exhibition includes two sections:"the Sea in Ancient Greek Art" and "the Sea in Contemporary and Modern Greek Art". A total of 5 ancient Greek relics (holographic projection) and 34 Greek contemporary and modern artworks were exhibited. Centering on the theme of "maritime civilization" and by means of holographic projection and contemporary and modern original artworks, the exhibition tries to showcase mythological figures, sea creatures, port ships and other related scenes depicted in artistic expression and media in different periods, and explore the special relation between Greece and the sea, as well as the long and deep love between Greeks and the sea from a historical perspective.
