The thought of a date 10,000 meters up in the sky may be a dream for many young women. But now it is on the silver screen in the chick flick Romance Out Of The Blue.

The 93-minute movie, directed by award-winning female director Ning Ying, is making a splash since it opened in the mainland theaters on Oct 23.

With a young cast mostly born in the 1990s, the movie tells the story of a romance between a rude airline stewardess and a middle-aged millionaire.

Rising actress Guan Xiaotong and veteran actor Xia Yu play the leads.

Ning said at a recent Beijing event that very few big screen productions targeted Chinese flight attendants, whose daily life and training are of interest to the general public.

The film crew spent several weeks with airline professionals to learn about their work, the director said.

For the 56-year-old filmmaker, better known for her art-house "Beijing" trilogy, which records the evolution of society in the Chinese capital, her latest film is a bid to cater to a changing market.

Since the romantic comedy Sophie's Revenge, starring top actresses Zhang Ziyi and Fan Bingbing, gained commercial success in 2009, more similar Chinese films are being made.
