GUANGZHOU, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The local welfare lottery center in the southern Chinese city of Dongguan said Tuesday that it donated more than 20 million yuan (3 million U.S. dollars) in lottery prizes after the winner failed to redeem by the expiration date.

A lottery ticket vendor in the city sold two tickets with numbers confirmed on Nov. 10, 2015 to win a combined 25.64 million yuan in prize money.

Under China's lottery rules, the holder of winning tickets should redeem the prize within 60 days after it is announced. The 25.64-million-yuan prize expired on Jan. 9 this year and the deadline was extended to Monday.

The rules also stipulate that expired prize money should be put into the welfare fund.

No one showed up as of midnight on Monday to claim the winnings, and the local welfare lottery center donated the money to the welfare fund.
