Defaulter denied flight ticket

A MAN, who avoided paying alimony and child support since 2014 following his divorce, was forced to pay up after discovering that he had been blacklisted on the credit system and was unable to buy flight tickets.

Zhou was forced to shell out 34,800 yuan (US$5,484), the Yangpu District People’s Court said yesterday.

As per the 2014 ruling, Zhou had to pay 2,500 yuan every month as alimony and child support. But he shirked his responsibility since getting the divorce, and moved to southwest China’s Chongqing City.

He also had no property in Shanghai, making it difficult for the court to execute the ruling.

But when he was unable to book a flight or a train ticket to Shanghai recently, Zhou was forced to travel by coach that took 30 hours to reach the city. Having learnt his lesson the hard way, he showed up at the court and paid up.

The court said under the credit system blacklist, defaulters can also be banned from leaving the country, denied stay at star-rated hotels or purchase properties. In extreme cases, their names could also be put out in the public.
