Rain, snow on the cards this week

  WITH the onset of Dahan, a solar term for great cold, on Wednesday, weather forecasters are predicting a mix of rain and snow this week for the city.

  A cold front from northern China is expected to bring in the chill this week with both the highs and lows tipped to stay below 5 degrees Celsius.

  On Tuesday and on weekend, the lows could drop down to the negative territory.

  The lunar year’s last solar term Dahan signifies that we are deep into winter and will experience the coldest days of the year.

  The skies will be clear today and tomorrow but there is the possibility of drizzles late on Wednesday.

  It will be raining on Thursday with the chances of sleet which may last late into Friday.

  The temperature will range between 1 and 5 degrees today. The temperature will dip slightly tomorrow with a high of 4 and a low of -1.

  It will be a bit warmer on Wednesday with the low at zero and the high around 6. On Thursday and Friday the temperature will fluctuate between 1 to 5 degrees with some rain and even snow.

  According to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, the city would usually receive the first snowfall on January 4. But in the past decade, it has been pushed back to late January or even February. In 2013 and 2014, Shanghai received the first snowfall in February.

  Yesterday, the locals celebrated the Laba Festival, which falls on the eighth day of the 12th lunar month. The Laba Festival is a prelude to the Spring Festival, which falls on February 8 this year.

  The air quality today will be slightly polluted, the local environmental monitoring center said, adding that it will be good from afternoon onwards.
