Pictures will help rebuild park

Local residents have contributed more than 100 old pictures of Zhongshan Park
in response to picture-collecting project launched by the park in
August. Zhongshan Park, built in 1914, was known as Jessfield Park and
Zhaofeng Park in the past. Some scenic spots in the park were destroyed
in the 1960s including a sculpture of Mao Zedong and Joseph Stalin, a bronze
bell and a sculpture of a deer. Even some old workers at the park could not
remember how the park looked in the past when they were told some of its old
scenic spots would be rebuilt. So the park turned to the public, calling
for old pictures of Zhongshan Park, according to Chen Jianming, an official with
the Shanghai Changning Park Greening Construction Developing Co Ltd. "It's
beyond our expectation that so many people sent us their pictures. They are all
precious," Chen said. "The oldest picture contributed dates back to 1937. We
hope we can rebuild these scenic spots from these pictures."
