As Chongming County has made ecological tourism one of its target projects, the "nongjiale" program, a tourist package which was launched in 1999 and involves living in a farmer's house and eating farm food, attracted 183,000 tourists last year. In Qianwei Village in the middle of the island, local farmers can earn 15,000 yuan (US$1,807) on average each year by providing accommodations to tourists.

* Chongming County is expected to boast 13,560 hectares of forest by May, occupying 20 percent of the county's total area. The county government had set a goal of building 3,133.33 hectares of forest area this year.
