Construction kicked off on the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge Project, the so-called Shanghai-Chongming Expressway, on December 28 on Chongming Island. The project includes an 8.9-kilometer tunnel connecting Pudong with Changxing Island and a 10.3-kilometer cable-stayed bridge between Changxing and Chongming islands. The entire project is expected to cost 12.3 billion yuan (US$1.48 billion) and be finished in five years.

* The county's tax revenues exceeded 2 billion yuan for the first time last year, growing 32.48 percent year on year. The district attributed the growth to increased investment since 2003.
