Fengxian Bay may one day become the city's top tourist attraction if the
district government's plan goes well.
The bay is blessed with a great
location in northern Fengxian District, facing the East China Sea and Hangzhou
Bay. It has developed at an amazing speed in the past few years. A growing
number of visitors already come for the natural scenery.
Still, the district
government knows that the beauty of nature alone is not enough. It organizes
many events at Fengxian Bay.
Kite-flying contests are one of the featured
activities and will begin on Saturday, the first day of the National Day
holiday. There are 10 teams from different provinces in one competition and
another 20 teams each representing a district in Shanghai in a different
contest. The number of teams entered in the contest is more than double last
year's.
Holiday period activities also include the first German Beer Festival
at Palm Beach Seascape Hotel, a sand sculpture show on Fengxian Bay's beach and
a concert.
The holiday activities end on October 6.
"We hope the whole
nation will get a further understanding of the bay through the festivals. More
people can take part in the activities and have fun," said Chen Jizhong,
organizer of the Fengxian Bay Tourism Committee.
The kite-flying contests
have been organized by the Fengxian Bay Tourism Committee. On October 1 and 2,
teams from Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Beijing, Hebei, Shandong, Hubei, Tianjin and
Shanghai will compete against one another.
The kite that flies the highest is
declared the winner. The 20 Shanghai district teams will compete on October
5.
Another contest pits Shanghai schools against one another. Students will
make the kites first with materials provided and then see how high they can get
it to fly.
The German Beer Festival welcomes all those that like a good pint
or 10. The brews will be on tap from 6pm to midnight on both October 2 and 3. A
German band with six singers will perform Bavarian songs and dances. Expect a
generous amount of German food such as sausages and sauerkraut.
Organizers
expect more than 50,000 people will take a look at the beachside sand sculptures
between October 1 and 6. The main viewing area is an artificial beach which is
nearly 3,000 square meters. Twenty sculptures will be on display.
A street
measuring 2 kilometers near Fengxian Bay has become a popular destination due to
its shopping venues, street sculptures and view of the ocean.
A newly
finished shopping plaza covers 80,000 square meters. Several apartment buildings
are nearby.
The government has yet more plans for the area. A blueprint for
the development of the eastern part of Fengxian Bay has been completed. It
includes a 42-story five-star hotel, a European-style town, an exhibition center
and an 18-hole golf course, which will open in November.
Future plans for the
bay area also include building a swimming pool above the ocean and a marina.
