Shanghai residents can sun themselves at the beach this summer without
leaving the city, when the country's largest man-made beach opens two months
from now in the city's Fengxian District.
The sea off Shanghai has a yellow
coloration due to the large amount of sand suspended in it. Three years ago,
Fengxian District began turning the yellow seawater to blue in a
2.8-square-kilometer trial area. Reclamation began in December 2004 and is
expected to be completed by July.
When the project is completed, as well as
enjoying sunshine at the beach and swimming in the sea, tourists will be able to
engage in various water-sports such as surfing, jet-skiing and para-sailing.
Facilities at the artificial beach will include 50,000-square-meters of parking,
a golf course, hotel accomodation, village resort and conference center.
