Retired doctor helping the sick

Chen Yingbo is a doctor committed to the health and well-being of Chinese
people. He's been providing free diagnosis and treatment to his patients for
16 years. Every Thursday night Chen makes himself available to treat sick
people despite being retired for more than a decade. He said he's been
studying traditional Chinese medicine for 56 years. "At the beginning of the
country's reform and opening up in the late 1980s, it appeared people were only
concerned about money," he said. "No one was interested in offering help for
nothing." "As a doctor, helping people in need is our basic duty and it has
nothing to do with money." Chen then proposed to set up a free clinic. In
1988, with the help of the Fengxian Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, the clinic
was established and opened once a week. Local doctors and nurses immediately
volunteered their services. Over the past 16 years, nearly 40 doctors have
been part of the team ensuring the continuation of the free medical
service. Chen said in the early days the clinic was in poor
condition. "Fortunately, we have received all kinds of help from the local
health bureau and hospitals," he said. "We've even received assistance from
schools and clothing factories." "We could not have run successfully without
their help," he said. The clinic mainly offers patients traditional Chinese
acupuncture and massage treatment. About 21,000 people have been treated at
the clinic. "Before I came to the clinic I had been feeling uncomfortable for
years," said Xiang Hua, a local resident. "I had been to various hospitals
for different checks, but none of the reports showed anything wrong." "It was
Doctor Chen who told me that I was deficient in vital energy." "I felt much
better after taking the herbs that he prescribed to me," he said. Residents
from nearby districts, such as Jinshan and Songjiang, have also come to the
clinic for help after learning they could receive free treatment. One patient
even wrote a letter to Chen asking about his chronic disease after he heard
about the clinic on a radio program. The 74-year-old doctor wrote back to him
immediately. "He wouldn't let us write the letter for him," said Cao Lin, the
team leader and doctor from Fengxian Guhua Hospital. Chen has encouraged his
daughter Chen Yue, also a herb doctor, to join the team. "I'm glad to see
that young doctors have realized the importance of helping people and don't ask
for anything in return," Chen said. "This is what a true doctor should do.
It is also the main reason why we opened the clinic." "We will probably
continue our work to spread love and care to the society," the doctor added.
