Body painting show
17/9/2004 16:53

An electronics shopping mall is planning something a little shocking to boost sales during the National Day holiday, assuming it can get approval from local authorities.
Shanghai Shengli Digital Square said it would hold an almost-nude body painting exhibition during the weeklong holiday.
"The activity will raise the cultural taste of our company and make the company more famous," said Jin Cong'an, the company's general manager.
Liu Dalin, a sociologist, said nudity can be artistic, "but it shouldn't be used abusively as entertainment to attract more customers. And I don't think there is any relationship between the company and nude body painting."
Zhang Youde, a sociologist at Shanghai University, said:  "The company wants to draw people's attention in the name of art."
According to the Ministry of Public Security and the State Administration of Industry and Commerce, nude body painting exhibitions are not allowed in the country.
Chen Xiangming, the manager of the company's planning department said the event will be legal as models will wear flesh-colored tights.
"They are actually not nude and I don't think we violate the ban," Chen said. He also pointed out all the models and painters are well trained and have put on such performances before.
Authorities still have to approve the show.
Officials from the Public Security Bureau said they won't interfere with the event if the models are not nude in public.
Xiong Yuanyuan, an official with the Huangpu District Cultural Inspection Team, said they  will make an investigation.
