Jiading District will invest 30 million yuan (US$3.6 million) to build
Shanghai's first grape theme park in its Malu Town. The park will open next
July, today's Jiefang Daily reported, citing township officials.
Built on an
orchard, the 30-hectare park will contain six sections displaying grape cultures
and growing techniques as well as providing a place for visitors to have
first-hand experience in growing and harvesting grapes. Visitors may squeeze
juices or even make wines with the grapes they pick in the park.
As well,
there will be a mini orchard in the park featuring other fruits such as
cherries, apples, peaches and apricots, according to township officials. While
producing fruit in the summer, these fruit trees and flowers will provide added
attractions in other seasons, which will help extend the park's business period,
they explained.
To further add attractions, small wine-making workshops and
rural inns with local flavors will be built near the park, they added.
Named
by the Ministry of Agriculture as "China's grape town" back in 1999, Malu has a
good reputation for grape growing. It now grows 4,000 mu (267 hectares) of
grapes and has 102 grape varieties.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors come
to the town each July and August to taste the grapes. This year's annual grape
technical and cultural festival will kick off in mid July.
