Jiading builds roads for Formula One fans
11/8/2004 15:12

With the Formula One auto race drawing near in the city's Jiading District, six roads that connect the circuit and the surrounding four expressways have been built so far, the district government announced.
The six roads, with a total length of 5.7 kilometers and costing 640 million yuan (US$77 million), each have four lanes for cars and two for bicycles.
At the same time, the 17.4-kilometer Jiajin Expressway, which connects Jiading with Jinshan District, is also under way. Construction of the R3 Metro Line was also started five years ahead of the original schedule because of the auto race.
"The roads and metro line will provide convenient traffic for F1 fans," said Jin Jianzhong, director of the district. "We believe all the vehicles and about 100,000 fans can be evacuated within one hour after the race ends, thanks to the roads extending in all directions."
In fact, the district government has paid much attention to the road construction. In the past five years, it has spent 3.35 billion yuan in total building and rebuilding 192 kilometers of roads. So far, a road network with three south-north and three east-west major roads and other roads has come into being, extending to the neighboring Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces. The network has helped improve the driving speed by more than 10 percent from five years ago.
"Supported by the Shanghai International Auto City, Jiading should first set up a traffic corridor to the Yangtze Delta so that the trade center of the auto city can attract more investors and purchasers," said Chen Yi, an officer of the district's Publicity Department. The three south-north major roads are Huyi Road to Jiangsu Province, Xiangliu Road from Nanxiang Town in the district to Liuhe Town of Jiangsu Province and Jiasong Road connecting the Huyi Road to Songjiang District.
The three east-west major roads are the 26-kilometer Cao'an Road extending to Jiangsu Province, the 17.4-kilometer Bao'an Road from Baoshan District to the district's Anting Town and the 24-kilometer Baoqian Road from Baoshan District to Jiangsu's Qianmen. In addition, the district also concentrates several expressways, including Hujia Expressway, the first expressway in the Chinese mainland, Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway from the city to Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province and Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway from the city to Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province.
According to the statistics from the traffic department, about two-thirds of the city's total land freight transport volume passes through the district. Every day about 76,000 vehicles went through the road entrances and exits in Jiading.
With the road construction going on, the district also keeps exploring ways to collect money.
