Police in Jiading District announced yesterday that a rabid dog which had
allegedly bitten several people was killed by armed police in Malu Township last
Saturday. At least two cops were injured before the dog was shot dead with
canisters in a residential area. "The injured are out of danger after
treatment," a Jiading District Public Security Bureau official
said. Residents alerted police on Saturday, reporting that a rabid dog had
attacked passers-by. "The dog had fled to Malu Township but we still don't
know where it came from," added the official surnamed Lu. However, according
to Shanghai Evening Post, the canine, a small mule with yellow fur, was raised
by a resident of Jinghe Village in Jiading District. The blanket search
involved officers from Jianbang Police Station, police assistants and
locals. "A suspect dog was spotted in a residential area later that day," Lu
revealed. "Armed police took action after witnesses recognized the violent
attacker." Meanwhile, the Jiading District Disease Prevention and Control
Center said that some people had received rabies vaccination since last week,
but gave no details. "We cannot confirm how many victims were injured by this
dog or whether it was a rabid dog," a center official surnamed Tan said. "Dog
bite accidents are not uncommon in Jiading as it is a suburban area where there
are more dogs."
