Organizers of the city's upcoming Formula One Chinese Grand Prix held a drill
yesterday to ensure all safety measures are in place in case of a crash during
the race. The drill was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was put back
due to bad weather. Organizing committee officials said the drill covered
every step from a crash until the injured driver receives treatment at hospital,
and they are confident everything is in place for the event, which runs from
September 24 to 26. "The drill was held to detect problems early. We have
gained experience and will enhance management to prevent any accident," Chen
Shiyi, chief medical officer with the organizing committee, said
yesterday. "We have designed road routes from the circuit in Jiading District
to Huashan Hospital in Jing'an District. With the cooperation of local police,
the whole trip will take less than 30 minutes," Chen added. "We have four
special operation rooms with the best doctors and nurses in every department for
any emergency," said Ding Qiang, Huashan's vice president. In yesterday's
drill, two Formula Two cars simulated a crash on the circuit and a driver was
stuck in the car. "Emergency workers pulled the driver out of his car within
four to five minutes," Chen said. "Then the helicopter transferred him to
Huashan immediately."
