F1 fraternity gushes over Shanghai circuit
27/9/2004 13:59

Formula One made a roaring debut yesterday at the stunning new Shanghai International Circuit in Jiading District with BAR-Honda's Anthony Davidson putting the marquee Ferraris and McLarens to shade with the fastest practice time.
Ferrari's seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher said it is the best track he has ever seen while other drivers like Jenson Button called it special - gorgeous even.
For Renault boss Flavio Briatore it is simply fantastic, the benchmark for Formula One, while Ferrari chief Jean Todt is taken with the architecture.
Drivers and team bosses are raving about the Shanghai International Circuit - the newest and most modern addition to the glamorous world of Formula One.
The impressive space-age facility has arisen from a boggy marsh in barely two years to what is being cited as the example other countries need to follow.
After taking a scooter round the track for the first time, Schumacher described it as "the best race track I have seen. It's a fabulous facility."
Button was equally impressed with what he had seen.
'Obviously it is a very special circuit," he said. "The commitment that has been put into building the new facilities, and also the circuit layout, are exceptional."
Canadian Jacques Villeneuve was even more gushing, calling the track "gorgeous, very beautiful."
Capable of holding 200,000 spectators, the circuit will be used for seven years at least and probably a lot longer if team bosses have their way.
Briatore said European tracks needed to take a long hard look at what has been achieved in China.
"The circuit is fantastic. This is an example, in Asia, we see Malaysia, we see Bahrain, we see Shanghai, it is much better than Europe," he said.
"The circuits in Europe are now looking really, really bad. We should invite promoters from Europe, from Magny-Cours and Silverstone, to come here," he said.
Jordan team boss Eddie Jordan said it was the little details in Shanghai that made the difference.
"What we see here is absolutely amazing, fantastic, and they need all the congratulations that you can imagine because it's the detail, things like the teams' rooms and the facilities there and we don't have that anywhere else," he said.
