Tennis anyone?
Minhang District will host the ATP Tour season-ending
Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai 2005, featuring the top eight male players in the
world. The tournament will be held from November 13 to 20. Taking advantage of
publicity for the Masters Cup, the district will roll out the Minhang Community
Culture Festival in October and November.
It marks the fourth year of the
festival, a 41-day event including 1.5 million participants.
A series of
community activities will be held under different themes all around the
district.
One of the festival organizers said it will display Chinese
community culture, enhance the district's reputation as well as introduce it to
the international audience.
As a prelude to the festival, some other
activities will take place. This includes a calligraphy, painting and
photography exhibition; a trivia contest about the Tennis Masters Cup; a dancing
festival in Qibao Town and a poetry festival in Jiangchuan Community.
The
most exciting event may be the opening ceremony of the Minhang Community Culture
Festival, which will be held on October 16 in Qizhong Stadium. The theme will be
"Passionate Minhang."
Also taking place is a Tap Dancing Contest, where
groups from 13 communities in Minhang will compete on October 23 in Gumei
Square. Each group will perform three programs.
One of Minhang's tap dance
team won second prize in the amateur group at the First Tap Dance Championship
Contest in Shanghai last year.
The Digital Video Filmmaking Contest invites
amateur directors to make a short film and enter it for judging. Digital video
filmmakers are encouraged to find inspiration through community
activities.
The exhibition hall at Qizhong Stadium will display Chinese art
including paper-cutting, masks, feather painting, straw painting.
The grand
opening along with the international tennis event will provide visitors an
opportunity to experience the community's culture and development.
During the
eight-day tennis extravaganza, spectators at the tournament will see glimpses of
Minhang's culture during interludes between tennis matches.
Specially built
for the Masters Cup, the 15,000-seat Qizhong Stadium may likely impress tennis
fans. The stadium has an eight-piece roof in the shape of a blooming magnolia
flower.
Audiences may enjoy an abundance of artwork on display, as well as
dance, singing and acrobatics performances between the matches.
The programs
will also include foreign culture performances. Artists from both East Asia and
Europe will participate in the festival. An organizer said that specific details
were not yet available.
