Charges laid in blackmail scheme

The Minhang District Prosecutors' Office yesterday approved the arrest of
Bu Pinggui, charging him with blackmail. Bu allegedly tried to extort 200,000
yuan (US$24,096) from his wife's boss, Li Xiangnan, by accusing him of having an
affair with the woman. Lu Qinjian, a prosecutor with the office, says Bu's
wife, Wang Lijuan, just worked as a temporary domestic helper for Li. On July
6, Bu waited for his wife to get off work. He saw Wang leave the company but she
wasn't heading toward their home. Instead of calling after his wife, Bu followed
her secretly. He saw Wang buy fish, pork and vegetables and then head into a
fourth-floor apartment in a residential area in Minhang. After a while, Bu
knocked on the door and a man in his fifties opened it. The man was only wearing
a pair of shorts. Without saying a word, Bu rushed into the room. But he
didn't find his wife in the bedroom and the bathroom as he had expected. Wang
was in the kitchen cooking. "I explained to my husband that I worked as a
temporary domestic helper for my boss because he was busy at work," Wang
said. Bu insisted Li, the owner of the apartment, was having an affair with
his wife and allegedly demanded he write an IOU for 200,000 yuan. Bu was
arrested outside a cafe after he met Li to pick up the money on July
11.
