Fire up paintball fun in Nanhui
7/9/2004 14:08

Wanna get out of the concrete jungle? Then take a trip to the real jungle.
Located by the city's seashore, Shanghai Pudong Shooting Club in Nanhui District provides visitors with an unforgettable experience.
According to the club's coach, the paintball games, set amidst a jungle scene, are mostly welcomed by visitors.
The game takes place as a group competition, usually played by two teams - one as the challenger and the other as the defender. Each team has 10 people.
Participants are equipped with 30 paintballs. When a paintball hits a person it "explodes" and looks like real blood.
The first 30 bullets cost 90 yuan (US$10.84).
The jungle features many barriers including blockhouses, shrubs and an observatory - all based on the scene of a real gunfight.
The coach warns that people must not shoot each other within 8 meters since paintballs can injure a person.
"It was really exciting, although I was shot by the 'enemies' several times during the fight," said Wang Wei, a university student, adding that it was her first time playing paintball.
She looked down at her camouflage clothing dotted with red paint.
"I would like to have another try if there is a chance," she said with a smile.
The coach said more and more young women are interested in participating in paintball games.
Specially designed imitation grenades (15 yuan each) - a similar size and with similar sound effects as authentic ones - are available as well.
The facility also acts as a training ground for the district's police officers with a gun range for real weapons including pistols, revolvers and rifles.
The Shanghai Pudong Shooting Club even has one gun used by Zhang Shan, an Olympic gold medal winner during the Barcelona Games.
Beginners are encouraged to try a revolver first. For experienced shooters, the club's coach recommended skeet shooting, which requires participants to hit clay pigeons fired from traps that simulate bird flight.
Prices range from 6 yuan to 10 yuan per shot.
Opposite to the site is a large grassland area with various facilities designed for younger students.
However, on a sunny day, under a blue sky, it might also be a good place for relaxing or having a picnic.
For people who would like to spend a long weekend or stay overnight, there are ferry boats going to an island not far from the gun range.
On the island are 17 wooden villas each with a different design.
One night costs from 400 yuan to 1,000 yuan. Since all the houses are surrounded by water, people are encouraged to go fishing.
The center of the island is covered with lotus flowers. Covering an area of more than 15,000 square meters, they form a great scene in the summer.
Among them is one fascinating flower named the "Friendship Peony Lotus." It has 270 petals and is the island's main attraction.
The shooting club is only a part of the district's Binhai Tourism Area.
Other nearby attractions include a golf club, a karting race track and a large peach orchard. There's also Shanghai Golden Seaside Resort, where visitors can ride horses, play beach volleyball, tennis as well as many other sports.
A large forest park is expected to open next month but it's still under construction.
It helps to have a car since not all of the attractions are within walking distance of one another.
