Vehicles vandalized at market
1/9/2004 16:34

Stall owners at a lamp market in Pudong are accusing the market's owner of ordering security guards to damage twelve vehicles early yesterday morning following a financial dispute.
Twelve small cargo vans and trucks parked outside the Dongming Furniture Trade Market on Yanggao Road S. in Pudong were damaged just after 12:40am yesterday, according to the stall owners.
Police haven't arrested any of the security guards whom the owners allege carried out the vandalism.
"Most of the vehicle's windshields were smashed with rocks and their rearview mirrors were destroyed or removed," said one vehicle owner surnamed Xu yesterday. Xu's cargo truck was damaged in the attack.
Several victims alleged they caught sight of four to five security guards working in the lamp market when they rushed to the scene after hearing the windshields being smashed.
"The center operator alleged we have delayed the latest rent payment for more than 20 days, but usually the rent is paid every three months according to our agreement," Xu said, adding the operator hadn't held any actual consultation with stall owners regarding the dispute.
Police were called to the scene but haven't yet launched a crime investigation of the incident yet.
