Up to 25 percent of Shanghai's total industrial output for last year came
from the Pudong New Area. The district generated 187 billion yuan (US$22.53
billion) in output value, up 16 percent from a year earlier. The district also
created about 104,000 jobs last year, 56,000 more than the quota set by the city
government.
£¤Doctors at Shanghai East Hospital in Pudong has for the third time
successfully transplanted both a heart and lungs in a single operation, which
took less than an hour. The patient, a girl surnamed Zhang who suffered from
terminal congenital heart disease, is now in good condition and is already able
to get about. The first person to get a double transplant at the hospital has so
far remained alive for more than 500 days since the surgery, the oldest survivor
of all who have received such a double transplant in China.
