Thousands of residents headed for Songze Square in Qingpu District on
September 29 to celebrate the second Dianshanhu Lake Cultural and Art Festival,
which runs through the end of the year. The programs, including singing, folk
dancing, playing electronic instruments and a display of fireworks, all
highlighted a combination of Chinese traditional culture and popular
culture. Covering an area of 62 square kilometers, Dianshanhu Lake boasts one
of the largest tourist resort in Shanghai, while Songze Culture, which
originated in the district, dates back about 6,000 years. The performance won
lots of applause from spectators. A high school student Liang Yue said with
excitement, "I never expected to see my idol singer in this close, there aren't
words to describe my feeling. I am thinking of getting a signature of
him!" This year's ceremony brought together a host of Chinese traditional
culture. In addition to some pop songs presented by popular singers Zhou
Bingqian and Wang Ziming, "Tiange" appeared on stage as well. Tiange - field
songs - are popular and sung by farmers workings in the fields during busy
farming seasons in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Their
typical singing form is that a leading singer sings it with the accompaniment of
gongs, drums and other instruments. It is featured by dozens of farming
related melodies and pieces like "Jiashan Field Son," of Zhejiang Province and
"Tian Shan Ge" of Qingpu District. The open-air celebration also invited some
of the foreign company leaders from the corporations located in Qingpu
Industrial Zone. With a total area of 56 square kilometers, the industrial
zone has gradually become a transportation hub among Jiangsu and Zhejiang
Provinces and the city. When the German company manager Marianne Baeumle was
asked about her feelings about living and working in Shanghai, she said, "As a
new resident to Qingpu, I'm deeply touched by it's rich culture and beautiful
environment. "The investment environment is agreeable, and Qingpu is now
developing in an amazing speed. I feel so good to live here," she
added. Nabil, another businessman from the zone, came from the United States.
His rendition of a Chinese song - "Legend of The Dragon" delighted the audiences
at the ceremony. His great enthusiasm towards the city can be found in every
single "I love Shanghai! I love Qingpu" shout during his singing. The night
peaked with the performance of renowned Chinese baritone Liao Changyong's
rendition of a traditional Chinese song. Liao's rich voice touched the
audience's heart. The culture and art festival will run throughout the year,
and the district culture bureau has designed various programs for the
residents. "We plan to enrich people's lives and introduce the rapidly
developing Qingpu to the world," said the District Director Jiang Yao.
