Fire, blast at factory, 4 hospitalized

Three chemical factory workers were in critical condition after a blast in
their factory yesterday morning. Doctors from Ruijin Hospital said they were
severely burned, one with burns over 80 percent of his body, and their condition
was life-threatening. A fourth worker was also hospitalized but his condition
was less severe. The blast happened at about 8am in Shanghai Yazhou Chemical
Factory in Qingpu District after a leak that caused a fire and explosion. The
factory was storing various dangerous and volatile chemicals but the exact cause
of the blast was not known. The fire was put out at 10:45am. A worker
surnamed Ni said the workshop stored at least three different kinds of liquid
chemicals, including methyl alcohol. Many workers were on the duty at the
time of the blast, but most of them managed to escape .
