The office building of the Qingpu Private Enterprise Association and the
Zhujiajiao Kangqiao Watertown were awarded the best commercial and residential
architectural prizes respectively by the US-based "Architectural Record" and
"Business Weekly" yesterday.
The prizes, inaugurated jointly by the
publications ten years ago, honor outstanding architecture worldwide. This year
marks the first time that the prizes have come to China, with projects built
between 2002 and 2005 being candidates.
The office building of the Qingpu
Private Enterprise Association, completed in October of last year, has the
appearance of a glass cube, representing a combination of modern and traditional
culture, said Sun Jiwei, vice governor of Qingpu District. The Zhujiajiao
Kangqiao Watertown is a modern representation of the ancient towns of Qingpu,
Sun pointed out.
A total of 16 Chinese construction projects were awarded
prizes.
