Drive-in set to open in Pudong
15/10/2004 16:20

A drive-in movie theater will open at Century Square in Pudong in either November or December.
It will be the city's second attempt at a drive-in movie theater. The first in Qingpu District's grand campsite Oriental Green Boat opened last year and closed soon afterward due to its relatively remote location.
"We have a more convenient location," said Zhang Baofeng, marketing manager of Century Square Management Company, which will operate the theater. "Beijing has four such theaters and Guangzhou has two. We think the theater will attract Shanghai's growing number of young private car owners."
The theater will be in a 20,000-square-meter square surrounded by a pool and greenbelt. Once open, movies will be screened every night from 7pm to 3am. Admission will be 100 yuan (US$12) per car.
There will be space for up to 300 automobiles and the theater will have food and beverage stalls with waiters on roller skates.
A large screen of more than 200 square meters will assure decent viewing angles. Automobiles larger than vans will not be allowed to enter.
The city's largest film distributor, United Cinema Lines, will offer film prints.
The company will prepare two rows of about 60 cars for people who don't own a car. Admission will also be 100 yuan per car.
"I will bring my girlfriend to try. It sounds pretty cool," said Xu Qiming, a 26-year-old car owner. "But I doubt if sitting in a car is as comfortable as sitting in a cinema."
