There's plenty to do during the holiday

During the week-long National Day holiday, which begins tomorrow, there's
plenty to see and do outdoors as part of programs organized by the Shanghai
Tourism Festival. The inaugural Shanghai Zhongkai International Rock Climbing
Competition, which has attracted more than 120 participants from home and
abroad, is an ideal opportunity to watch this breathtaking
sport. Participants face a 20-meter-high synthetic climbing
wall. Originating in Europe, rock climbing is an increasingly popular
adventure around the world. It's a good chance for local people to learn about
the sport firsthand. On october 22, the 99.8-meter-high Tianma Hill, near
Sheshan Hill, in Songjiang District will host a hill-climbing
festival. Located 40 kilometers from downtown, Tianma Hill was formerly
dotted with several temples and nicknamed "mountain for burning joss sticks."
Today it features an 800-year-old ancient leaning tower, an old ginkgo tree,
caves and a pavilion at the top that offers a spectacular bird's eye view of the
area. An orienteering competition in the nearby Sheshan Hill National Forest
Park provides another opportunity to have some fun. A sport for everyone,
orienteering has been described as "running while playing chess" and "cunning
running." It offers an intellectual challenge in addition to physical
exercise. Competitive orienteering involves using a detailed map and a
compass to navigate round a course with designated control points that are drawn
on the map. Fast running alone does not make you a winner. You must choose
the best route between the control points and find the markers without wasting
unnecessary seconds. If you are not the climbing type you might want to try
your luck at fishing. The binhai Tourist Resort in Nanhui District offers
fishing facilities from 9:30am to 5:30pm through the National Day holiday.
Tourists can sit around the manmade lake and give it a go with no limits on the
catch. There is also a golf course, shooting ground and go-kart racing track
nearby. If getting back to nature isn't your idea of a good time, you can
always head over to the Formula One circuit for a look at the track. During a
one-day tour, tourists can visit Anting Town, a Confucius temple and the newly
built Formula One grounds.
