Those walking past the northern square of Shanghai Railway Station will no
longer have to look at blocks of shanties. A large renovation of the square's
dilapidated buildings will be kicked off in the first quarter of this year, at a
cost of more than 5 billion yuan (US$602.41 million). Old houses will be torn
down while more than 8,200 families will be relocated by the district's
government. The project, which will change the ghetto into a more fashionable
complex, is expected to be completed in three years.
