Mauritania becomes best performing economy in Africa in 2006

Mauritania has been classified in the first position among the 10 African
countries which recorded the best economic performances in 2006, according to
information reaching Dakar. This was revealed by an economic review entitled
"developments in the socioeconomic situation in Africa," a document published by
the UN Economic Commission for Africa which concludes that Mauritania was the
best performing country in Africa in 2006, Mauritanian News Agency reported on
Saturday. This document highlights several factors which have contributed to
this scenario including economic stability, appreciation of the value of the
national currency, ouguiya as well as investments in the new sectors of
hydrocarbons, mineral exploration, tourism and fishing. The nine other
countries which recorded the best economic results in 2006 are Angola,
Mozambique, Sudan, Ethiopia, Libya, Liberia, Democratic Republic of Congo, the
Republic of Congo, and Malawi.
