Nepal, Bangladesh to hold trade talks next week

The commerce secretaries of Nepal and Bangladesh will meet next week in
Dhaka to discuss various issues related to enhancing bilateral trade between the
two countries, a Nepali official said in Kathmandu Monday. "The meeting to be
held on April 20-21 is a regular one, in which issues regarding promotion of
bilateral trade, commerce and investment will be discussed," Bharat Bahadur
Thapa, secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, told
reporters. Thapa and Siddiqur Rahman Chowdhury, Bangladeshi commerce
secretary, will lead their respective delegations to held the talks in the
capital of Bangladesh. When asked about Bangladesh's proposal for signing a
bilateral free trade agreement, Thapa said both countries will firstly seek a
special trading arrangement in the ambit of the South Asia Free Trade Area
(SAFTA) and the Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand Economic
Cooperation (BIMST-EC). Although the talks have been termed a "regular
meeting," Dhaka is likely to push for finalizing draft agreements on using
Mongla port for export-import purposes, and facilitate movement of vehicles
carrying goods and introduction of bus services between the two countries, he
revealed.
