On July 5, Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Co. announced that it had
developed a new portainer crane which can hold and move four 40-foot containers
at the same time.
The crane has two block and tackles attached to the boom at
different heights, each capable of lifting two 4o-foot containers. The higher
tackle lifts containers from cargo ships and moves them toward a transfer
station, while the lower tackle will hoist them onto delivery trucks.
Two such cranes have been ordered by Qingdao Port in east China's Shandong
Province.
As a kind of gantry crane, a portainer crane is a very large
lifting machine used to load and unload container ships and is only seen at
container ports. The most commonly used crane at present can hoist two 20-foot
containers simultaneously.
Zhenhua Port Machinery Co, one of the world's
biggest crane manufacturers, plans to make 190 various lifting machines this
year with total sales exceeding US$1.5 billion.
