Emperor Palace Casino, the 18th casino in China's Macau Special
Administrative Region (SAR), opened in Macau Thursday. International movie
celebrity Jackie Chan hosted the lights-up opening ceremony of the Grand Emperor
hotel, where the casino is located. The seven-floor new casino features an
entire floor of slot machines worth 3 million Hong Kong dollars
(US$428,000). The hotel is operated by Emperor Entertainment Hotel Limited,
which has been listed in the Hong Kong stock market. Macau, with a population
of 480,000, has a 150-year history of gaming industry and is the only part of
China where casino gaming is legal. Direct tax paid by the previous 17
casinos dominates over 70 percent of the SAR government's annual revenue.
