EU slaps anti-dumping measures on Norwegian farmed salmon

The European Union (EU) on Tuesday imposed definitive anti-dumping
measures on Norwegian farmed salmon in the form of a minimum import price of
2.80 euro per kilogram. A minimum import price of 2.81 euro per kilogram was
provisionally imposed by the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, in
June 2005 to replace an EU tariff on salmon from Norway which had been in place
since April 2005. The tariff, ranging between 6.8 percent and 24.5 percent
and was calculated on an ad valorem basis, had been introduced by the Commission
in response to complaints from EU salmon farmers, mainly in Scotland and
Ireland, that a sudden surge in imports from Norway was driving them out of
business. The measures is intended to "stabilize the EU market and to
preserve the interests of all parties concerned," the EU's decision-making body,
the EU Council, said in a statement. The ad valorem duties would be
"disproportionate" and are to be dropped, the statement
said.
