The European Union Partnership to Reinforce Immunization Efficiency
(EU-PRIME) has earmarked an additional 3.38 billion naira (US$26.4 million) to
support polio eradication in Nigeria from 2007 to 2008, an official said
yesterday. EU-PRIME team leader Abba Umar said that under the Routine
Immunization Component, 6.4 billion naira (US$5 million) had been earmarked to
carry out immunization in the focal states including Abia, Cross River, Gombe,
Kebbi, Osun and Plateau. Nigeria's northwestern state of Kebbi, being part of
the prime focal states, had benefited immensely from the EU-PRIME support, Umar
said. EU had similarly set aside 112 million naira (US$875,000) in support of
routine immunization in the state, he added. He also presented 65 motorcycles
and 1,400 copies of Basic Guide Hand-Books to the 21 local government areas in
the state. According to him, EU spent about 10 billion naira (US$78.1
million) to support polio eradication in the country between 2002 and 2006.
