Japan's foreign reserves fall below US$1 trillion level

Japan's foreign exchange reserves dropped below the US$1 trillion level
for the first time in four months, said the Finance Ministry today. Japan's
foreign reserves, the world's second largest following China, shrunk to
US$996.98 billion at the end of May, a loss of US$6.86 billion from late
April. The reserves, which hit a record high of 1,US$015.59 billion in late
March, consist of securities and deposits denominated in foreign currencies,
International Monetary Fund reserve positions, IMF special drawing rights and
gold.
