Japan's central bank retains interest rate at 0.5 pct

Japan's central bank decided today to keep its key interest rate unchanged
at 0.5 percent. The widely expected move came at the end of its two-day
policy meeting amid concerns over soaring prices of energy, food and other
commodities. Although the Bank of Japan (BOJ) revised downward its overall
assessment of Japanese economic conditions to "sluggish," its Policy Board voted
unanimously to retain the target rate for unsecured overnight call money for a
18th straight month.
