Indonesia launches online book program

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono launched today an electronic
book program that would provide free online school books for teachers and
students across the country. During the launching event at the presidential
palace, Minister of National Education Bambang Sudibyo called on local
governments help the education sector by downloading the books, printing them
and providing them free to the students in their area. "The Ministry of
National Education bans teachers from selling books and let students buy books
directly from retailers," Antara news agency quoted the minister as
saying. He said this program should help improve access to education as well
as quality of education in the country. Currently, there are over 400 book
titles on various subjects available on the site, comprising of 95 titles for
elementary schools, 72 titles for junior high schools, 24 for senior high
schools and 216 for vocational schools.
